Radio-Scaphoid Extension Roll & Glide

Position of the therapist:

  • Standing or sitting across from the patient

Position of the patient:

  • Sitting in front of the bench
  • Elbow propped up on the bench

Hand placement:

  • Therapist’s contralateral hand fixates the distal radius
  • Other hand grabs the patient’s thumb and thenar eminence including the scaphoid like in an arm wrestling position
  • Alternative: see video

Direction:

  • Roll into dorsal and increasingly proximal direction
  • Glide by a pull on the scaphoid into palmar and decreasingly proximal direction

N.B:

The proximal component is achieved by approximation of the joints, so in a sense pull into palmar direction and push the joint partners towards each other at the same time
