Scapulothoracic Elevation & Depression

Position of the therapist:

  • Standing at the long edge of the bench

Position of the patient:

  • Side-lying position on the unaffected side close to the edge and facing the therapist
  • Hips and knees bent for stability

Hand placement:

  • Patient’s forearm supported with the shoulder in MLPP
  • Both hands grab onto the scapula
    • One hand from cranial around the acromion and scapular spine
    • One hand from caudal at the inferior angle of the scapula

Direction:

  • Elevation: Both hands move the scapula cranially over the thorax
  • Depression: Both hands move the scapula caudally over the thorax

Optional: Add more or less degrees of up-/downward rotation or pro-/retraction
