MC Flexion Test

Execution:

  1. The patient is in sitting position with the hand on the examination table
  2. The examiner grasps the patient’s hand with one hand in order to stabilize the wrist and metacarpals in neutral position
  3. With the other hand, the examiner places the metacarpal in flexion

 

Positive Outcome: Pain, even a slight painful sensation, in the basal joint region of the thumb

Comment: The MC-flexion test appears to be a good test to confirm the diagnosis of CMC osteoarthritis. A negative test, however, does not always imply negative radiographic evidence of thumb CMC osteoarthritis.
