Execution:
- The patient is in sitting position across from the examiner
- The patient’s hand is placed on the examination table with the elbow flexed to 90° and the forearm in neutral rotation
- The examiner supports the patient’s ulnar side of the hand to maintain the wrist in neutral position and to prevent ulnar deviation
- The other hand is placed such that the examiner’s thumb rests dorsally over the head of the thumb metacarpal
- The examiner firmly directs an adduction force downward onto the patient’s metacarpal head until the patient’s thumb metacarpal lies parallel to the midis of the index metacarpal or until a firm end-feel is reached
Positive Outcome: The patient’s pain at the CMC 1 joint is reproduced
