Adduction Test

Execution:

  1. The patient is in sitting position across from the examiner
  2. The patient’s hand is placed on the examination table with the elbow flexed to 90° and the forearm in neutral rotation
  3. The examiner supports the patient’s ulnar side of the hand to maintain the wrist in neutral position and to prevent ulnar deviation
  4. The other hand is placed such that the examiner’s thumb rests dorsally over the head of the thumb metacarpal
  5. The examiner firmly directs an adduction force downward onto the patient’s metacarpal head until the patient’s thumb metacarpal lies parallel to the midis of the index metacarpal or until a firm end-feel is reached

Positive Outcome: The patient’s pain at the CMC 1 joint is reproduced
