Eden / Military Brace Test

Execution:

  1. Patient is in upright sitting position with the chest pushed out and shoulder pulled back
  2. The examiner palpates the patient’s radial pulse at the wrist of the affected side, brings the arm into extension and holds this position for up to 1 minute

 

Positive Outcome: Reproduction of patient’s familiar symptoms or abolition of the radial pulse

Comment: Some authors mention that additional narrowing o the costoclavicular space can be achieved by asking the patient to hold the breath after a deep inhalation as the first rib elevates and further approaches the clavicle. However, this can also lead to false positive test outcomes for the Eden test as further narrowing in the two other intervals occurs as well
