Release / Surprise Test | Anterior Instability

Execution:

  1. Patient has had a positive Apprehension and Relocation Test
  2. Patients shoulder is in 90° of abduction and maximal external rotation, while the examiner performs an AP glide on the humerus
  3. The examiner suddenly releases the AP pressure without telling the patient

Positive Outcome: Patient’s fear of luxation returns after the AP pressure on the humerus is released

The Release Test is a follow-up test of the Relocation Test. Be careful to not bring the arm into further external rotation or horizontal abduction while releasing as you may risk anterior luxation!
