Bear Hug Test | Subscapularis

Execution:

  1. The patient is standing
  2. Ask the patient to put the hand of the painful shoulder on top of the other shoulder
  3. Patient flexes the shoulder to 90° (elbow pointing forwards)
  4. Patient is asked to apply downward pressure on opposite shoulder

 

Positive Outcome: Weakness and/or pain compared to the other side

Comment: The Bear Hug Test minimized pectoralis, latissimus dorsi and teres major action while maximizing subscapularis action on EMG, but does not seem to be able to detect subscapularis tears
