GIRD

Execution:

  1. Patient is in supine lying position with the shoulder abducted to 90°
  2. The examiner palpates the coracoid process with his thumb to prevent/check for scapular movement
  3. The examiner grabs the patient’s arm at the wrist and brings it into internal rotation where it is measured with a goniometer
  4. The examiner repeats the process on the other shoulder and compares both sides
  5. The examiner measures external rotation in both sides as well and notes the total range of motion (TROM) of both internal and external rotation in both shoulders

 

Positive Outcome: Loss of >10° in internal rotation and loss of >10° in total ROM between sides

Comment: In the throwing shoulder a loss of internal rotation can be compensated by a gain in external rotation. Therefore the TROM has to be taken into account
