Pupil Assessment:
- The examiner inspects the shape and symmetry of the patient’s pupils
- The examiner assesses the pupillary light reflex by shining a light into the eyes and checking for constriction of the pupil
- The examiner assesses the accomodation reflex by asking the patient to first look into the distance and then focus on the tip of their nose and checks for constriction of the pupil
Eye Movement Assessment:
- Patient sits in front of the examiner and looks straight ahead
- The examiner asks the patient to:
- Gaze upward and to the right
- Gaze upward and to the left
- Gaze horizontally and to the right
- Gaze horizontally and to the left
- Gaze downward and to the right
- Gaze downward and to the left
- Alternatively, the examiner asks the patient to follow a hatpin/pen in an H-Pattern
Positive Outcome: Side-by-side differences of reflexes. The patient experiences double vision during eye movement assessment or fails to move the eyes
