Cranial Nerve I: Olfactory Nerve

Execution:

  1. Patient is in standing or sitting position and asked to close the eyes and to keep them shut
  2. The examiner asks the patient to keep one nostril shut during the test
  3. The patient is asked to identify the smell and the test is repeated on the other nostril
     

Positive Outcome: Failure to identify the smell and side-by-side differences
