SI Joint Play

Execution (for the right SIJ):

  1. The patient lies in prone position
  2. The examiner places the hypothenar of the left hand on the patient’s SIJ in the quadrants 2 and 4 (see above) with the fingers facing caudally
  3. With the right hand, the examiner grabs onto the ilium and pulls dorsomedially, while the other hand exerts pressure on the sacrum to prevent movement

Positive Outcome: The test is positive for a hypomobile SIJ if the examiner cannot feel any joint play compared to the other side

Comment: SIJ palpation tests for movement have shown to be unreliable without ‘pain provocation’ as an outcome measurement.
