3-Phases Test of Menell (Lumbar Spine)

Execution for the Lumbar Spine Part:

  1. Patient is in prone lying position
  2. The examiner fixates the vertebrae T12 with a pincer grip into ventrocaudal direction
  3. With the other hand, the examiner grabs the patient’s thigh from the inside to generate internal rotation (close-packed position of the hip) at the hip and extends the patient’s hip until resistance is felt

 

Positive Outcome: Reproduction of the patient’s pain in the last phase of the test (lumbar phase) which indicates nociception from the lumbar spine
