Resisted External Derotation Test | Gluteal Tendinopathy

Execution:

  1. The patient is in supine position with the examiner standing on the side to be examined
  2. The patient’s hip is flexed to 90° and placed in external rotation
  3. The patient is then asked to actively return the hip into its neutral position against resistance by the examiner
  4. In case of a negative test in the first position, the test is repeated in prone lying position with the hip extended, the knee flexed to 90° and the hip brought into external rotation
  5. Again, the examiner gives resistance against active derotation from external to neutral rotation

Positive Outcome: Reproduction of the patient’s symptoms which is usually lateral pain at the hip joint
