Piriformis Test | Piriformis Length and Piriformis Syndrome

Execution:

  1. Patient is in side-lying position at the edge of the table
  2. The examiner brings the hip at the side to be tested to 60° of flexion with 90° of knee flexion, while the contralateral leg remains completely extended
  3. The examiner then fixates the pelvis with one hand and applies downward pressure at the flexed knee with the other hand

Positive Outcome: The patient complains about stretch in the buttock area (indicating shortening of the piriformis) or radiating/shooting pain or tingling down the leg (indicating compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle)
