Execution:
- Patient is in side-lying position at the edge of the table
- The examiner brings the hip at the side to be tested to 60° of flexion with 90° of knee flexion, while the contralateral leg remains completely extended
- The examiner then fixates the pelvis with one hand and applies downward pressure at the flexed knee with the other hand
Positive Outcome: The patient complains about stretch in the buttock area (indicating shortening of the piriformis) or radiating/shooting pain or tingling down the leg (indicating compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle)
