Execution:
- Patient is in supine position with the hips and knees flexed to 90° and the lumbar spine in neutral position
- The patient is then asked to stabilize this position by grabbing onto the back of the thighs
- The patient actively extends the knee on the side to be tested, while his lumbar spine remains in neutral position
Positive Outcome: The patient is not able to extend the knee further than within 20° of full extension, which indicates hamstring shortening on that side
