Prone Instability Test

Execution:

  1. The patient lies in prone position and the examiner stands on the unaffected side
  2. The examiner flexes the patient’s knee of the affected side to use it as a lever for external rotation and places his other hand on the posterior aspect of the greater trochanter
  3. The examiner then applies a downward force at the trochanter while externally rotating the patient’s hip

Positive Outcome: Reproduction of anterior hip pain is consistent with a positive test result for instability

Comment: The Prone Instability Test seems to be a good test to confirm hip microinstability, while it cannot be used to rule out the condition. Further validation studies are warranted though.
