McCarthy Test | Hip Labrum Pathology

Execution:

  1. Patient is in supine position with both hips maximally flexed by the examiner
  2. Then, the patient is asked to hold on to the unaffected leg and to keep it in full flexion
  3. The patient’s hip is passively extended in maximal external rotation
  4. Afterwards, step 3 is repeated with the hip in maximal internal rotation
  5. Steps 3 and 4 are repeated on the asymptomatic side

 

Positive Outcome: Reproduction of the patient’s familiar hip pain with or without a click
