Seated Piriformis Stretch Test

Execution:

  1. Patient is in sitting position with the legs over the edge of the treatment table, the hips flexed to approximately 90° and the knee extended
  2. The examiner palpates the sciatic notch and then adducts and internally rotates the affected limb

 

Positive Outcome: Patient’s familiar complaints of gluteal pain and/or paresthesia radiating into the posterior aspect of the lower extremity are reproduced

Comment: This test is thought to lengthen the deep rotators of the hip joint and create dural tension of the sciatic nerve in an effort to elicit familiar pain
