Execution:
- Patient is in side-lying position on the unaffected side, flexes the knee of the affected side and places the foot of that leg on the examination table
- The examiner palpates for the m. piriformis
- The patient is instructed to drive the heel into the examination table, initiating active hip abduction and external rotation while the examiner applies resistance to this movement at the patient’s knee
Positive Outcome: Patient’s familiar complaints of gluteal pain and/or paresthesia radiating into the posterior aspect of the lower extremity are reproduced
