Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) | Fall Risk Assessment

Execution:

  1. Download the Falls Efficacy Scale questionnaire
  2. Ask your patient to rate their fear of falling during different activities mentioned in the questionnaire (16 items)
  3. For every answer a score from 1 (not at all concerned) to 4 (very concerned) is given
  4. Calculate the sum of all answers given

Outcome: A score of >23 indicates a high fear of falling and may positively predict future falls for the long 16-item version. In the 7-item version, an increased risk of falling is indicated by a score >10.

Comment: Delbaere et al. (2010) report that both scales have acceptable structures, good validity and reliability and can be recommended for research and clinical purposes.
