Heel Thump Test

Execution:

  1. Patient is in sitting position with the lower leg hanging over the edge of the bench
  2. The patient’s ankle is in slight plantarflexion due to gravity
  3. The examiner stabilisers the patient’s leg and gives a firm thump on the center of the calcaneus. The force should be directed along the axis of the tibia

 

Positive Outcome: Pain over the anterior or posterior aspect of the ankle or in the distal leg, corresponding to the area of the anterior or posterior tibiofibular ligament and interosseous membrane, respectively
