Cranial Nerve XII: Hypoglossal Nerve

Execution:

  1. The patient is asked to open the mouth
  2. The examiner inspects the patient’s tongue for atrophy, which may become apparent due to wrinkling and loss of bulk at the top of the tongue and its borders
  3. The examiner asks the patient to stick out the tongue and checks for deviations to one side
  4. At last, the examiner assesses the strength of the tongue by asking the patient to stick the tongue out to the side against the inside of the cheek. The examiner then presses against it

Positive Outcome: Wrinkling and loss of bulk of the tongue is apparent. In unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy, the tongue also deviates to the side of the lesion
