Cranial Nerve XI: Accessory Nerve

Execution:

  1. The patient is in sitting position
  2. The examiner inspects the neck for atrophy
  3. In case no atrophy is apparent, the patient is asked to shrug the shoulders and to not let the examiner push them down
  4. Then, the examiner asks the patient to rotate the head in both directions against resistance applied by the examiner

 

Positive Outcome: Atrophy of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles is apparent or the patient can’t hold the isometric contractions against the examiner’s resistance
