Execution:
- The patient is in sitting position
- The examiner inspects the neck for atrophy
- In case no atrophy is apparent, the patient is asked to shrug the shoulders and to not let the examiner push them down
- Then, the examiner asks the patient to rotate the head in both directions against resistance applied by the examiner
Positive Outcome: Atrophy of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles is apparent or the patient can’t hold the isometric contractions against the examiner’s resistance
