Regional Thoracic Spine Extension T1-T4

Position of the therapist:

  • Standing at the long edge of the bench on the side to be examined/treated

Position of the patient:

  • Upright sitting position at the short edge of the bench
  • Patient’s shoulder at the same height as the therapist’s shoulder
  • Patient puts the hands in their neck and the elbows together

Hand placement:

  • Establish contact with the patient’s upper arm on the contralateral side by placing an arm below the patient’s elbows
  • Thenar eminence of other hand fixates T5 into ventrocranial direction
  • Patient brought slightly forward by flexing at the hips maintaining an upright trunk

Movement:

  • Maximal homonymous 3D movement with equal components of extension, ipsilateral lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation
    This movement causes maximal compression of the facet joints of the upper thoracic spine on the ipsilateral side
