Segmental Extension C2-C7 (supine)

Position of the therapist:

  • Standing at the short edge of the bench
  • The head part of the bench is lowered to make room for the extension part of the movement

Position of the patient:

  • Diagonal supine lying position
  • C1-C2 maximally rotated

Hand placement:

  • Fixating hand on C3 with a key grip into ventrocranial direction with back of the hand resting on the bench
  • Working hand placed on arch of C2
  • Patient’s head fixated between working hand and therapist’s shoulder/chest in a chin tuck
  • In order to test the lower segments, the fixating hand moves down on C4 with the working hand on the contralateral arch of C3. Continue until the fixating hand reaches C7

Movement:

  • Maximal homonymous 3D movement with the working hand and shoulder with equal components of extension, ipsilateral lateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation
  • To test each component of intervertebral motion, slightly move out of the end-range and now test extension between C2 and C3 by moving C2 into further extension by flexion the knees
  • To assess rotation, rotate C2 to the side to be tested between the forearm and shoulder
  • To test the lateral flexion component, keep C3 fixated and move C2 laterally by moving the body sideways
