Abduction
Position of the therapist:
- Sitting face-to-face of the patient
Position of the patient:
- Sitting face-to-face of the therapist
- Patient’s arm propped up on the elbow
- Forearm in pronation
Hand placement:
- Contralateral hand stabilises the distal carpal row from dorsal so that the index finger fixates the trapezium
- Ipsilateral hand grabs patient’s thumb
Direction:
- Roll into palmar and slight radial direction
- Glide into dorsal and slight ulnar direction
Adduction
Position of the therapist:
- Sitting face-to-face of the patient
Position of the patient:
- Sitting face-to-face of the therapist
- Patient’s forearm on the bench
- Forearm in pronation
Hand placement:
- Contralateral hand fixates forearm on bench
- Thumb and index finger of ipsilateral hand grab patient’s thumb close to joint line
Direction:
- Roll into dorsal and slight ulnar direction
- Glide into palmar and slight radial direction
