Distraction Test

Execution:

  1. Patient is in supine lying position and the examiner is standing on the affected side
  2. The examiner places the palms of their hands on the patient’s anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS)
  3. Afterwards, the examiner gives 3-6 moderate velocity thrusts with gradually increasing pressure in dorsolateral direction

 

Positive Outcome: Patient’s familiar pain (usually in the buttock, lower lumbar spine, posterolateral thigh and groin) is reproduced

Comment: The Distraction Test is the most specific test in the Cluster of Laslett (see below). Performed with increasing pressure instead of thusts and with a cross-grip in the Cluster of van der Wurff.
