Eichhoff’s Test

Execution:

  1. The patient extends the arm and has it rest on the treatment table with the ulnar aspect of the forearm and the wrist hanging freely
  2. The examiner asks the patient to make a fist with the thumb inside the fingers
  3. The examiner stabilizes the forearm and deviates the wrist towards the ulnar side

 

Positive Outcome: Sharp pain over the tendons of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis at the styloid process

Comment: Confusion in the literature has lead clinicians to believe that this test is the ‘Finkelstein’ test. However, this test is likely to produce a lot of false positive results due to it’s very provocative nature.
