Crank Test

Execution:

  1. The patient is in supine lying or sitting position
  2. The patient’s arm is elevated to 160° in the scapular plane with the elbow flexed to 90°
  3. The examiner applies an axial load and brings the patient’s shoulder into repeated internal rotation followed by external rotation in an attempt to pinch the torn labrum

 

Positive Outcome: Clicking with or without pain or apprehension by the patient

Comment: The meta-analysis of Gismervik et al. (2017) included 2 studies for the Crank test. In total they show a weak accuracy for the Crank Test to detect SLAP tears.
