Moving Valgus Stress Test | Medial Collateral Ligament Tear

Execution:

  1. Patient is in upright sitting or standing position
  2. The examiner abducts the patient’s shoulder to 90° and maximally flexes the elbow
  3. Then the examiner applies a valgus force to the elbow and brings the shoulder into maximal external rotation
  4. At last, the elbow is quickly extended to about 30° of flexion

Positive Outcome: Known sudden medial elbow pain is reproduced and the pain should be maximal in an arc between 70-120° of elbow flexion

Comment: While this test seems to be a very good test to both in- and exclude medial elbow instability, the study had a small patient population of 21 patients and is the only study known.
