Active Range of Motion (AROM) of the Ankle and Foot

AROM defines the range of motion through which the patient can actively move with the help of the muscles acting over that joint.

The goal of AROM is to detect possible symptoms like pain and to determine their location, quality and intensity. Furthermore will you be able to see how freely your patient can move in a specific joint, while you are looking for compensatory strategies to achieve that movement.

The standard values for AROM movements in the ankle and foot are:

Dorsiflexion at the talocrural joint : 20°

Plantarflexion at the talocrural joint: 50°

Inversion (Combined movement of plantarflexion, adduction and supination) at the subtalar joint: 45° to 60°

Eversion (Combined movement of dorsiflexion, abduction and pronation) at the subtalar joint 15° to 30°

Flexion great toe: 45° at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, 90° at the interphalangeal (IP) joint

Flexion lateral 4 toes: 40° at the MTP joint, 35° at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints, 60° at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints

Extension great toe: 70° at theMTP joint, 0° at theIP joint

Extension lateral 4 toes: 40° at the MTP joint, 0° at the PIP joints, 30° at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints
